Physical Description

The Niphates sp. a medium sized Porifera, has a digitate branching structure with each branch being about 1 cm thick and extending 5 cm in length.

As a Demospongiae , its structure is surrounded by a thick layer of spongin, a porous collagen based substance. These pores may be seen with the naked eye , giving it a rough textured look on the outer surface.

The general colour of the species is navy blue with regions that have been exposed to physical stress having a grayish tone due the ejection of pigment.
